If you have ever fancied a walk through the park on Christmas Day but had to rethink your plans because it has been locked, you will be happy to know that you will as the council will be opening all of its parks throughout the holidays including Christmas Day.

This year, after listening to residents, many who have said they like to go for a walk in a local park on Christmas Day – the council has decided to keep all parks open on Christmas Day.

Judith St John, Divisional Director for Sports, Leisure and Culture said: “Our borough has over 120 parks and green spaces which are great for recreation, sports, play and relaxation and are treasured by our local community and visitors alike. From small open spaces, to local parks or parks of national repute, such as the fabulous Mile End Park and the majestic Victoria Park, visitors can enjoy them all, including on Christmas Day.”

Judith added: “Go for a wander to explore our local parks and see some of the beautiful gifts of nature on our doorsteps this winter.”

Tower Hamlets Council recently hosted a community tree planting event as part of the Woodland Trust’s Big Climate Fightback. Held at the Mile End Park Woodland Trail, the event saw volunteers plant a mixture of deciduous and evergreen tree species.

Stephen Murray, Head of Tower Hamlets Arts, Parks and Events, said: “Our award-winning parks are a jewel in the crown of Tower Hamlets. It’s essential that we keep them replenished with new trees and support this crucial climate change initiative.”
